The Ashmore Foundation
The Ashmore Foundation ("the Foundation") was established in January 2008 (registered charity number 1122351) as the charitable arm of the Ashmore Group plc ("Ashmore"), reflecting Ashmore's overall philosophy that we can and should make a positive difference in the communities in which Ashmore operates and in the countries in which Ashmore invests. The Foundation therefore seeks to provide financial grants to worthwhile causes within the Emerging Markets in order to enhance human welfare, opportunities and capabilities, particularly for those that are vulnerable: children, young people and disadvantaged communities.
The Foundation employs one dedicated member of staff responsible for the management of the trusts affairs, reporting to a board of trustees made up entirely of Ashmore employees. The grant making policy is wide ranging but maintains a particular focus on education and health, the former in particular seen as the best way to help the long term self development of Emerging Market countries. The Foundation is also interested in supporting social enterprise and sustainable livelihoods as a method of reducing poverty in a manner that empowers people to help themselves.
The Foundation considers both recommendations and unsolicited applications, seeking in particular to support innovative organisations which display a deep knowledge of the local context and culture, demonstrable involvement of and commitment to the community served, a good track record, professionalism, ability to measure results, and cost-effectiveness.
As of December 2010, the Ashmore Foundation was supporting around 20 organisations working in more than 10 Emerging Market countries.
